This is the Star Wars Holiday Special Cartoon that is the premiere of the notorious Boba Fett. Boba Fett’s character was originally designed to be Darth Vader’s right hand man portrayed more as a highly trained and extremely dangerous Stormtrooper. As this persona Fett would have been an instrument to the Empire and a dangerous enemy to the Rebel Alliance.

It was not until later that George Lucas decided that Boba Fett should play a bounty hunter which is a more unpredictable role with no real alliance to any institution; hence his first appearance in the Holiday Special stripped of the Imperial white armor and donned in his iconic Mandolorian garb. This portrayal of Boba Fett was then carried on to the “Empire Strikes Back” and then again into “Return of the Jedi” and beyond.

However, there are some discrepancies with this first appearance in the Holiday Special because Han Solo does not recognize the notorious Bounty Hunter. In reality there have been novels written (Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn by A.C. Crispin) where Han Solo and Boba Fett encountered each other before and Boba Fett had told Solo of his intentions in capturing him. In “A New Hope: Special Edition” while Jaba the Hutt confronts Solo about unpaid debts Boba Fett can be seen. This scene was added after the release of the cartoon however it only adds to the confusion of Fett’s debut. Some argue that during the Holiday Special Cartoon Solo was still recovering from his sickness making him confused so he would have not recognized the bounty hunter. I will leave that to your discretion.

Han once being a slave himself on the Trader’s Luck and a resident on Ylesia for a time has a strong opposition to any form of forced labor. However, while serving the Galactic Empire, as a respected Naval officer, Lieutenant Han Solo oversaw many operations performed by the oppressive and prejudice Imperial army. On a mission to make a transaction for Wookiee slaves from Trandoshan slavers Lieutenant Solo was in command of the TIE fighter fleet that was to provide security for the Imperial Destroyers.

Chewbacca was known for his heroism in attempts to free Wookiee’s from either Trandoshan or Imperial Slavers. While captive aboard the slaver ship of the notorious Trandoshan named Ssoh, Chewbacca found the opportunity to eradicate himself as well as his Wookiee companions while the slavers prepared for their transaction with the Imperial fleet. After his daring escape Chewbacca found himself
at the mercy of the approaching Imperial Navy.

Meanwhile Lieutenant Solo returned to the Imperial flagship to report to his superiors about the situation. The commander responsible for the purchase of Wookiee slaves, Commander Nyklas, discovered that a prisoner led mutiny had occurred compromising the situation. He then order Lieutenant Solo to destroy the slave freighter. However, Han was aware of the defenseless Wookiee captives on board and refused to perform an offensive strike against them and instead delivered the young Wookiee who led the revolt to his commanding officer.

Nyklas was outraged by Solo’s deliberate disobedience and revoked his flying license and took the young Wookiee miscreant as his personal whipping boy. After repeated abuse Chewbacca lashed out against the chauvinistic officer. This enraged Wookiee could easily dismember Nyklas with his bear hands so Nyklas quickly drew his weapon and took aim.

Han Solo observing the whole ordeal remembered back to his experiences aboard the Trader’s Luck and how the elderly Wookiee, Dewlanna, abandoned her offspring on Kashyyyk to remain aboard the freighter and make sure young Han received sufficient health care and education. She also taught Han the Wookiee language Shyriiwook and gave her own life so Han may follow his dreams. Han then felt obligated to intervene and save the Wookiee slave and help him flee.

Han was then left with his dreams in ruins for he was dishonorably discharged from the Imperial Navy for his actions and now had a walking carpet rambling about a life debt following him everywhere. Little did Han know it was his new Wookiee companion that would become Han’s first true friend and loyal first mate, Chewbacca.

Han, a surnameless young Correllian of 19 years, resided aboard the pirate starship Trader’s Luck under the command of the rueful, former bounty hunter Garris Shrike. While living as an orphaned slave child Han was forced to beg for money, steal, con, and compete in swoop bike championships for cash rewards to fuel Shrikes payroll. His only friend/ mother figure Dewlanna, the elderly Wookie mess hall chef aboard the Luck encouraged Han to pursue his dream of becoming a starship pilot for the Imperial Navy and sacrificed her own life to the hands of the vengeful Shrike to aid in Han’s escape as he stowed away on a freighter to Ylesia.

Han arrived at the supposed religious colony which was run by the Huttese cousins called the t’landa til. Han took on the alias of Vykk Draygo and was hired as a pilot to transport shipments. Teroenza was the high priest of the colony and encouraged “Vykk” to always be accompanied by the Togorian named Muuurgh. Originally intended as a spy to keep an eye on the Correllian con, the feline sentient soon became Han’s good friend as they partnered up to decipher the conspiracy of the religious cult.

In their pursuits of discovering the secrets behind the Ylesian encampment Han discovered three things. 1.) Ylesia was a slave labor, drug manufacturing facility run by the Besaddi Hutt known as Zavval. 2.) The so called religion the slaves were following was a intricate trick performed by the t’landa till “priests” to cause the pilgrims to believe they were being blessed by “The One and the All” through an addictive ecstasy. 3.) The final and possibly most important thing Han discovered on Ylesia… was true love.

Her name was Bria Tharen and she was a victim of the t’landa till and Han could not live to see her believe the lie and slowly die as she processed raw spice (our equivalent to drugs). Han then devised a plan to rescue her as well as Muuurgh and his mate Mrrovv and destroy the facilities of Ylesia. In doing so Han indirectly killed the Hutt overlord Zavval.

Han and Bria spent a romantic “honeymoon” like vacation together after their daring escape warming even the most callus of hearts (including mine) with sentimental dialogue and chivalrous moments. Han and Bria then made their way to the Imperial Center so Han may apply to the Imperial Academy and fulfill his dream of being the best star pilot in the galaxy.

However, the Imperial Center only brought devastation to Hans heart. Bria left Han with merely a note leaving him heartbroken and furious. This then leads to Han’s general lack of trust in anyone. Once Han was admitted to the Imperial Academy his pessimism of selflessness grew for all people have done was let him down and leave him broken hearted. Han from then on solemnly swore to look out for “number one” as he would live solo… as Captain Han Solo.
